Walkable Community

A walkable community is the cornerstone to an active and thriving community. The construction of a walkable community provides an affordable transportation system that makes it easy to enjoy physical activity and choose alternatives to driving to schools, parks and nearby activity centers. Everyone benefits from walking, enjoying improved fitness, cleaner air, reduced risks of certain health problems and a greater sense of community. Providing safe, inviting, walking alternatives leads to more social interaction, physical fitness and diminished crime and other social problems. Provision of an interconnected system of on and off street paths and safe places to cross streets will encourage opportunities for activity within the everyday living environment. See more in the Comprehensive Plan.

SmokeFreeColorado: The Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act

Since July 1 Colorado’s indoor air has been free of smoke. On March 27, 2006 Governor Bill Owens signed House Bill 1175, the “Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act” into law. The purpose of this act is to preserve and improve the health, comfort, and environment of Colorado residents by limiting exposure to tobacco smoke. This law covers all indoor places, with some exemptions. For more information visit SmokeFreeColorado.org or call 1-888-701-2006.

Broomfield Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership

Tobacco use is the #1 cause of death in the US. Over 4,000 people die in Colorado from smoking related illnesses each year. Tobacco claims more lives than drugs, alcohol, firearms and motor vehicle accidents combined. Smoking and secondhand smoke contributes to heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, and is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke.

America On The Move®

Why Americans are getting on the move...

The eating and physical activity patterns of many Americans have made us the most overweight nation in the world. More than 60% of American adults do not get the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity a day, and 25% of American adults aren’t physically active at all. More than 120 million Americans -- 64.5% of the adult population -- are overweight; nearly 59 million, or 31%, are obese.

Simple changes
America On the Move’s pilot program, Colorado On the Move, demonstrated that Americans can stop weight gain by balancing energy expenditure and calorie consumption. The message is simple: move more and eat less by making 2 small daily changes...

  • Take 2,000 more steps (about 1 mile)
  • Eat 100 fewer calories.
